California Academy of Sciences: African Hall

Academy Studios was sub-contracted by Cinnabar, to replicate 9 pre-existing dioramas of the 1933 African Hall and help create 4 new dioramas. Bushbucks, Lions and Roan Antelopes and their corresponding habitats are a few of the African animals/habitats explored. The initial dioramas used toxic materials that required special containment measures during dismantling. The original diorama murals were painted directly on to the wall and executed by multiple painters, giving our muralist the challenge of replicating multiple painting styles. Our fabricators created scientifically accurate rockwork and plants for each specific habitat into which the original taxidermy and some plant materials were set. Over 8500sf of canvas, 63 gallons of paint and 8 tons of fiber-reinforced plaster were used in the making of the new African Hall dioramas.
